House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 30, 2017 11:11 AM
From: Representative Maria P. Donatucci
To: All House members
Subject: K9 Veterans and Services Day in Pennsylvania (former HR 124)

In the near future, I will be re-introducing a resolution – former House Resolution 124 – which designates March 13, 2017 as “K9 Veterans and Services Day” in Pennsylvania.

This resolution recognizes the important services provided by dogs, their trainers, handlers, and others who have helped save human lives through military and law enforcement efforts.

Joseph J. White, now deceased, was instrumental in the effort to recognize our canine heroes. The retired military working dog handler established an annual K9 Veterans Day on March 13, the day the United States K9 Corps was created in 1942 for service in World War II and beyond. Mr. White believed strongly that canines provide critical services to their law enforcement and military handlers, have helped to save many lives, and therefore deserve special recognition.

Today, K9 services include dogs and their handlers, trainers, and other helpers involved in police services, drug enforcement, customs, border patrol, search and rescue, secret service and many other capacities. In my view, they have earned our thanks for their efforts to protect all of us.

Please join me by co-sponsoring this resolution to recognize K9 Veterans and Services Day in Pennsylvania.
