MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 24, 2017 10:26 AM
From: Representative Leanne Krueger
To: All House members
Subject: 100th Anniversary of the United States' Entry into World War I

In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into World War I and the nation’s contributions that proved indispensable to the Allied victory in 1918.

From the start of World War I in 1914 until early 1917, the United States maintained a position of neutrality in the war tearing through Western Europe. As a nation of immigrants, Americans – many of whom traced their roots to nations involved in the conflict – largely favored this position. But by early April 1917, the United States could no longer overlook the naval aggressions of Germany. President Woodrow Wilson sought, and Congress delivered, a declaration of war against Germany on April 6, 1917. Less than three months later, the first 14,000 U.S. infantry troops landed in France to begin training for combat.

From then until the war’s end on November 11, 1918, Americans made vital contributions to the Allied effort at home and abroad. More than two million American soldiers fought on battlefields across Western Europe with more than 53,000 giving their lives to the cause. At home, the American economy mobilized to support the war effort. Citizens planted extra vegetables and conserved heat to provide extra food and fuel to the war effort. And a massive publicity campaign drew not only soldiers, but also financial contributions.

Please join me in commemorating the 100th anniversary of America’s entrance into World War I and in recognizing the veterans of this war and the thousands of Americans who supported the Allied cause in countless other ways.
