Subject: Inciting Violence Against a Law Enforcement Officer (Re-Introduction)

In the near future, I will re-introduce legislation – House Bill 2063 of the 2015-2016 Legislative Session – that establishes a criminal penalty for inciting violence against a law enforcement officer.

There is currently no law in Pennsylvania specifically aimed at prosecuting those who incite violence against law enforcement officers. My legislation establishes a felony of the third degree for a person who willfully advocates violence against one or more law enforcement officers that is likely to incite or produce such violence. The term “law enforcement officer” is defined to mean any person who is vested by law with a duty to maintain public order or make arrests, or any person who is on active state duty for an emergency. The definition ensures that we are protecting not only police officers, but also our other law enforcement officers, such as parole agents and DCNR rangers.

Law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to enforce the laws of this Commonwealth, to protect and serve its citizens, and to ensure safety for all. In a time when law enforcement officers face intense public scrutiny, it is crucial that we do all we can to protect those who protect us. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation.
