MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 10, 2017 01:57 PM
From: Representative Curtis G. Sonney
To: All House members
Subject: Off-duty Emergency Personnel Coverage

In the near future, I will be reintroducing legislation which will amend Section 601 of the Workers’ Compensation Act to extend Worker’s Compensation (WC) protection to members of emergency medical services agencies when not officially on duty.

Specifically, my proposal extends WC coverage to EMS personnel while officially not on duty if all the following apply;

-They suffer injury or death as a result of rendering first aid.
-They are a member of a volunteer ambulance company
-They are operating within their scope of practice;

I believe it is important to protect our EMS providers on and off the clock who provide emergency services. My intention is to cover those trained employees, who may hesitate otherwise to offer assistance at the scene of an accident, simply because they aren’t on the clock.

This is a reintroduction of former HB 592. Prior cosponsors include; D. COSTA, DAVIS, FARRY, MASSER, MURT, O'NEILL and READSHAW.

As always, I appreciate your consideration and support of this legislation.
