MEMORANDUM

Subject: Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week

I am introducing a resolution to recognize January 30 through February 3, 2017 as Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week in Pennsylvania. Criminals have found many ways to victimize Pennsylvanians including filing fraudulent tax returns in someone else’s name.

Pennsylvanians are not immune to tax identity theft. Residents in their 20s are at the highest risk for tax identity theft victimization, however, anyone at any age can be targeted. We must properly dispose of any documents that contain personal and identifying information by shredding bank and credit card statements as well as old tax returns. In addition, we can protect ourselves by using firewall and anti-virus software on devices, creating strong passwords on websites, and not opening e-mails from unknown senders.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to bring awareness to Pennsylvanians.
