MEMORANDUM

Subject: Co-Sponsorship: Designating the month of January as "Glaucoma Awareness Month"

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of January as “Glaucoma Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania. The resolution would join the outreach efforts by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in raising awareness about glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and irreversible blindness in the United States, affecting more than 3 million Americans. Glaucoma has no noticeable symptoms in its early stages, and vision loss progresses at such a gradual rate that people affected by the condition are often unaware of their vision loss until their sight has already been compromised.

Despite these concerning facts, glaucoma is preventable. Early detection is vital to keeping the diseases from progressing and further deteriorating the patient’s vision. The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises routine, comprehensive eye exams to defend against developing glaucoma-related blindness.

Pennsylvania recognizes that glaucoma is a leading cause of vision loss and blindness and echoes the American Academy of Ophthalmology, advising routine, comprehensive eye exams as the best way to defend against the negative effects to vision caused by glaucoma.

Please join me in helping designate the month of January 2017 as “Glaucoma Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania in an effort to raise awareness about glaucoma.
