Subject: Early Detection Testing of Firefighters for Bladder Cancers

I intend to introduce legislation that would encourage the Department of Health to provide programs to firehouses that focus on bladder cancer education, prevention and early detection and to provide voluntary testing for each firefighter in this Commonwealth.

Sixty-eight percent of firefighters will develop cancer in their lifetimes and firefighters under 60 years of age have higher rates of bladder cancer compared to the general population. Because of the high incidence of this type of cancer in firefighters, some firehouses in this country offer testing for bladder cancer. It is important to ensure that every firefighter in this Commonwealth understand his or her increased risk for bladder cancer, the steps that can be taken to decrease that risk and how they can be tested for bladder cancer.

I hope you will join me in sponsoring this legislation.
