MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 30, 2016 02:43 PM
From: Representative Marguerite Quinn
To: All House members
Subject: Designates September 2016 as Sepsis Awareness Month in Pennsylvania

Sepsis, commonly called "blood poisoning," is the body's overwhelming response to infection which may lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death. Sepsis is caused by an infection usually associated with an illness such as diabetes or cancer, or by an injury such as a cut or a scrape. This medical condition may also be caused by an infection following a routine surgery or medical procedure. Sepsis kills approximately 258,000 Americans annually and that number is increasing. Sepsis is considered to be the most costly in-hospital condition in the nation, costing more than $20 billion each year.

Until a cure for sepsis is found, early detection is the best hope for survival. I hope you will join me in raising awareness of this life threatening condition by cosponsoring this resolution designating September 2015 as Sepsis Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.
