Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: August 16, 2016 10:50 AM
From: Representative Frank Farina
To: All House members
Subject: October as Native American Month

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the month of October as Native American Month in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The resolution celebrates the heritages and cultures of Native Americans in Pennsylvania and the United States.

Native American Month appropriately honors the diverse cultures, histories, and traditions of Native Americans. This resolution is an opportunity to reflect on the many contributions Native Americans have made to our state and our nation, and the sovereign government-to-government relationship the United States maintains with tribes.

Native Americans developed principles fundamental to our own Constitution, such as freedom of speech and the separation of powers. These ideas became the foundations for a new American government and are still with us today.

During this month and beyond, I ask my colleagues in the House of Representatives to recommit to strengthening the relationship between tribes and the United States. The month of October should serve as a reminder that the federal government has treaty and trust obligations to tribes, and we must do more to ensure that the tools exist to build stronger and healthier tribal communities.

I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
