Subject:	Elder Abuse Awareness Day - June 15, 2016

Next week, I plan to introduce a resolution to designate June 15, 2016 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Pennsylvania. Approximately 24,500 reports were made to the Department of Aging in 2015. It is assumed the number is drastically underestimated, given the fact many cases of elder abuse go unreported in the Commonwealth. As a member of the Luzerne County Elder Abuse Task Force, I understand the importance of working together with State and local law enforcement, the district attorney and the Area Agency on Aging to create a comprehensive team to combat elder abuse and protect these vulnerable citizens. Elder Abuse comes in many forms including physical abuse, mental abuse, sexual abuse, neglect of care, abandonment and becoming more common, financial exploitation. We must protect the health, safety and well-being of the seniors in Pennsylvania. Please join me in creating more awareness of elder abuse by cosponsoring this resolution. *As part of creating more awareness, I urge all of you to add the Statewide Elder Abuse hotline to your constituent outreach by posting the number on websites, social media and in newsletters. The number is 1-800-490-8505. The hotline is open 24 hours a day.
