House of Representatives
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 29, 2016 11:35 AM
From: Representative Patrick J. Harkins
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution: Designating the Week of April 10 through 16, 2016, as “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating the week of April 10 through 16, 2016, as “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week” in Pennsylvania.

In 2014, at least 21 million Americans were victimized by crime, 5.4 million of whom were victims of violent crime. The millions of survivors of crime and their families are no less deserving of justice, rights, resources, restoration and rehabilitation than the violent offenders who victimize them. The citizens of Pennsylvania realize that we can make our homes, neighborhoods, and communities safer and stronger by serving victims of crime and ensuring justice for all.

The United States Department of Justice’s Office for Victims of Crime was established to enhance the capacity to assist crime victims and to promote justice and healing for all victims of crimes. For many years, the Office for Victims of Crime has helped lead communities throughout the country in their observance of “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,” helping to boost public awareness about the challenges presented to victims of crime and celebrating the hard-won progress in victims’ rights and services. Concerned citizens, victim service providers and criminal justice officials are joining together across the nation to recognize “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week,” which will be observed April 10 through 16, 2016.

Please join me in recognizing the observance of “National Crime Victims’ Rights Week” and in supporting victims of crime throughout this Commonwealth and the nation. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
