Subject: Co-Sponsorship of Resolution – STEAM Initiative Week

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the week of April 3 through 9, 2016, as “STEAM Initiative Week” in Pennsylvania.

I have been a longtime advocate of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). STEM skills keep our country at the forefront of innovation and technology, as well as making us a leader in science technology. And, just as importantly, STEM occupations pay more now and will continue to do so well into the future.

With that said, I am now promoting “STEAM” education, which adds “Art” to the STEM acronym. Indeed, there is a growing movement to add “Art” to “STEM” to equal “STEAM.” This movement recognizes the essential roles that art and design play in enhancing STEM education and research. Artists and designers have the ability to take complex scientific concepts and communicate them effectively to a broad range of audiences, making technology more accessible and improving the overall product. A cell phone is a perfect example of merging art and design with technology. If we want to foster innovation and leadership in the global economy, we must support educational and entrepreneurial growth in both the scientific and creative spheres.

Please join me in sponsoring this resolution to highlight the importance of STEAM education for Pennsylvania students.
