MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 24, 2016 12:05 PM
From: Representative Thomas P. Murt
To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Single Largest Loss of American Soldiers in the Gulf War

On February 26, 1991, an Iraqi missile demolished a barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia that housed more than 100 American troops. Troops from the 475th Quartermaster Group, an Army Reserve unit based in Farrell, Pennsylvania and comprised of numerous Pennsylvanians, were asleep in the barracks at the time.

The Scud missile attack, which was credited to be the most devastating Iraqi action of the Persian Gulf War killed 29 and wounded 99 Americans.

A detachment unit of the Army Reserve group was deployed to Dhahran only days before the deadly attack. Though the front lines of the war were far from the barracks, the ground war was being waged in Dhahran.

Unfortunately, there were no early detection systems for this particular attack, eliminating the option of unpreparedness and resulting in instant tragedy.

In the near future, I will be proposing a resolution to commemorate the lives of the American soldiers lost during the Persian Gulf War 25 years ago. Please consider joining me in support of this resolution to commemorate the lives lost and the Pennsylvania communities impacted.
