Subject: | World Tuberculosis Day 2016 |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a House Resolution recognizing March 24, 2016 as “World Tuberculosis Day” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While the bacteria can infect any part of the body, most of the time it settles in the lungs. TB is transmitted from person to person via droplets from the throat and lungs of people with the disease. In 2010, the United States reported more than 11,000 cases of TB and during that same year, Pennsylvania had over 200 cases. World TB Day, which is observed annually on March 24, was established in honor of Dr. Robert Koch. Dr. Koch discovered the bacterium that causes TB, which was the first step towards diagnosing and curing TB. Pennsylvania constructed three TB centers dedicated to the treatment of the disease. South Mountain Sanatorium, Cresson Tuberculosis Sanatorium and Hamburg Tuberculosis Sanatorium. South Mountain is located in my district and currently serves as the state-run South Mountain Restoration Center. These impressive centers of healing are testament to the Commonwealth’s commitment to effective and humane medical treatment. It is my hope that you will join me in raising public awareness of TB and the efforts made to prevent and treat this disease. Thank you for your interest and support. |
