Subject: | Influenza Awareness Act |
Older Pennsylvanians are far more susceptible to serious flu-related complications compared to young, healthy adults due to weaker immune systems. While flu seasons can vary in severity, during most seasons, people 65 years and older bear the greatest burden of severe flu disease. In recent years, it is estimated that between 80 and 90 percent of seasonal flu-related deaths have occurred in people 65 years and older. Furthermore, between 50 and 70 percent of seasonal flu-related hospitalizations have occurred among people in that age group. In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that will require each assisted living residence and personal care home in the Commonwealth to post and disseminate information about the flu vaccine. The following information will be posted in a public place of the facility by August 1 of each year:
Providing Pennsylvania senior citizens with the information they need to protect themselves and those around them is essential to keeping them healthy and saving lives. I hope you will join in co-sponsoring this important legislation. Thank you for your interest and support. |
