MEMORANDUM

Subject: Benefits for Paid Fire Chiefs

In the near future, I plan to introduce a package of bills that would amend the Borough Code and Frist Class Township Code relating to benefits for paid fire chiefs.

Recently, it has come to my attention that a majority of paid fire chiefs in the Commonwealth are in Third Class Cities. The Third Class City Code provides that fire chiefs must be paid the same amount or more than the unionized firefighters that they supervise.

My legislation would amend the Borough Code, as well as the First Class Township Code. It would allow paid fire chiefs who have been removed from the bargaining unit, to receive no less than the same salary increases, including fringe benefits (excludes overtime and holiday pay) as the highest-ranking paid member of the Collective Bargaining Unit.

Our fire personnel do a tremendous job in protecting the residents of this Commonwealth. They put their lives on the line to protect our families and community. Therefore, please join me in leveling the playing field by extending what we provided to fire chiefs in Third Class Cities to all fire chiefs.
