MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Condolence Resolution: Honoring the Life and Service of Harvey L. Crudup

In the near future, I will be introducing a condolence resolution honoring the life and service of Harvey L. Crudup, who passed away on September 9, 2015, at the age of 80.

In 1958, Mr. Crudup joined the Philadelphia Police Department as a patrolman, beginning a 31-year career with the department, as well as a lifetime of service. Mr. Crudup served as captain of the 39th Police District until 1983, where he often spoke out on crime trends and encouraged interaction between police officers and the community. The next year, Mr. Crudup was appointed as a deputy police commissioner, making him one of the few African Americans to attain a leadership position within the Philadelphia Police Department.

Mr. Crudup served as a deputy police commissioner until Mayor W. Wilson Goode named him to become executive director of the Youth Study Center, Philadelphia’s maximum-security detention center for youth offenders. A champion for youth development, Mr. Crudup also co-founded Concerned Black Men in 1975 along with four other police officers. Concerned Black Men began as a youth mentoring organization and has since grown into an international group whose members include former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. His lifelong efforts to serve and better his community include his role as president of the Cheltenham Branch of the NAACP.

Mr. Crudup, of Wyncote, is survived by his wife, Nona Crudup; his son, Harvey Crudup, Jr.; a grandson; and many nieces and nephews. Please join me in recognizing Mr. Crudup’s memory and legacy.
