Subject: Expanding Eligibility of Disabled Vets for Real Estate Tax Reductions

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation expanding program eligibility for disabled veterans to receive real estate tax reductions.

Currently, veterans who are classified as 100% disabled by the U.S. Veterans Administration (VA) are exempt from paying any real estate taxes on their primary home, provided they meet other program requirements under the Real Estate Tax Exemption Program.

There are veterans who are not classified as less than 100% disabled that are deserving of tax relief as well. This bill attempts to provide some relief for the veterans who do not have a 100% rating but are disabled and nonetheless impaired in their ability to earn a living.

The bill proposes matching the level of relief to the disability percentage as determined by the VA. For example, if a veteran is categorized as 50% disabled she would be entitled to a 50% reduction in real estate tax owed.

The Real Estate Tax Exemption Program is a great way to show appreciation to disabled veterans and help them enjoy a normal life.

Please join me in recognizing and assisting all disabled veterans by expanding the program’s criteria and co-sponsoring this legislation.
