| With food allergies that can lead to a life threatening allergic reaction, or anaphylaxis, becoming a large and growing health problem, access to life saving medication makes sense. Experts have estimated that 1 in 13 children in the US have food allergies and anaphylaxis to food allergies results in 90,000 emergency visits and approximately 1,500 deaths annually. As a result, in the near future, I will be introducing legislation permitting entities such as summer camps, colleges and universities, restaurants, amusement parks, sport facilities, daycares and other facilities to have non-patient specific epinephrine auto-injectors in their facilities. This legislation would not require any entities to carry, but permit them to have the product on the premises for emergency situations. The entity must follow the protocol to maintain non-patient specific epinephrine auto-injectors. It outlines the training to be provided, as well as the liability protection for the trained employees that administer the dose in a proper manner. Last session, we passed legislation, which became law, to permit schools in PA to carry the medication. Today, over 2,645 PA schools are participating in a program to receive free epinephrine auto-injectors. Already this year, 11 states (AR, CO, GA, IA, IN, KY, MN, NV, OK, UT and WV) have passed similar legislation. Please join me in sponsoring this life saving legislation. |
