MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 28, 2015 09:24 AM
From: Representative Steven J. Santarsiero
To: All House members
Subject: Amend Title 75 (Vehicles) by allowing use of speed timing devices by local police officers

In the near future, I plan to re-introduce former HB 1297 of 2013-14, which would amend Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes by permitting local police officers usage of speed timing devices, commonly referred to as radar, in an effort to increase traffic safety throughout the Commonwealth.

Presently, only Pennsylvania State Police officers are authorized operators of speed timing devices. My legislation permits radar usage by full-time local police officers currently employed by full-time service police departments in counties of the first, second, second A and third class. Prior to operating speed timing devices, local police officers must complete training approved by both the Pennsylvania State Police and the Municipal Officers’ Education and Training Commission. In addition, local municipalities must adopt a local ordinance permitting such devices; as well as, erect signs 500 feet outside the boundary of the political subdivision that notifies motorists of radar usage within the municipality.

Please join me in supporting this legislation ensuring greater safety on our roadways.
