MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 12, 2015 04:13 PM
From: Representative Mark Mustio
To: All House members
Subject: Amending the Engineer, Land Surveyor and Geologist Registration Law

In the near future, I will introduce legislation that amends the Engineer, Land Surveyor and Geologist Registration Law. The legislation makes a number of changes to current exemptions and cleans up some loose continuing education language.

Under the current law, there is a broad exemption from licensure for engineers that work in industrial settings whether or not the engineering work affects safety, health or welfare. My proposal eliminates that exemption. The elimination of this exemption will make for less confusion and better public protection.

This bill also replaces antiquated terms like "correspondence courses" and "tutorials" with "distance learning". The intent is to strengthen the integrity of the continuing education requirements for licensees under this act.

The passage of this legislation will bring about a safer Pennsylvania without creating an undue burden on the engineering community.

This legislation is supported by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers and the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers and the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors.

Introduced as HB1253
