Subject: | Request for Co-sponsorship: Resolution Recognizing the 100th Anniversary of Philadelphia’s South 9th Street Italian Market |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing the 100th Anniversary of Philadelphia’s South 9th Street Italian Market. In the mid-to-late 1880’s, Italian immigrant Antonio Palumbo opened a boardinghouse, providing housing for his fellow immigrants. Over the years, a number of businesses grew in the community surrounding the boardinghouse, supplying the neighborhood with necessary goods and services. Eventually expanding to encompass an area over nine blocks, this community of businesses became the South 9th Street Italian Market, the largest outdoor continuous market in the nation. Since that time, the South 9th Street Businessmen’s Association and the South 9th Street Italian Market vendors have joined in the ongoing support and preservation of this historic marketplace. To this day, the landmark site continues to sustain the community, while fostering a growing and diverse community of immigrants. Each May, a one of a kind celebration is held, enticing visitors to experience the history, culture and food of this diverse community. This year especially, the celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the market, is expected to attract visitors from far and wide. In this manner, the market and its cultural riches further serve the community by promoting economic growth and development. Please join me in recognizing Philadelphia’s South 9th Street Italian Market as it celebrates this historic milestone. |
