House of Representatives
Session of 2015 - 2016 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 21, 2015 09:56 AM
From: Representative Glen R. Grell
To: All House members
Subject: Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

In the near future, I will be introducing a House Resolution recognizing May as “Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.” Former Representative Dick Hess had introduced a similar resolution in years past. Last session in Dick’s memory and on behalf of the 1,659 children and adults living with cystic fibrosis in our Commonwealth, I introduced House Resolution 830 and I plan to reintroduce a similar resolution in the near future.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that:
  • clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and
  • obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.
In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have further enhanced and extended life for children and adults with CF. Many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond.

I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this House Resolution. Please contact my office at 783-2063 if you have any questions.
