Subject: | Person-First Language Legislation |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution calling for the use of person-first language with respect to people with disabilities. Language shapes ideas, attitudes, and beliefs and thus influences government decisions, policies, and laws. Person-first language is important for people with disabilities. Person-first language places the individual before his or her disability and uses neutral, objective, accurate, and nonperjorative language about disabilities. This Resolution urges the Commonwealth, including the General Assembly, to adopt and utilize person-first language for people with disabilities. The use of person-first language in legislation, policies, and other documents will contribute greatly to the integration, inclusion, and participation of children and adults with disabilities in society. The use of person-first language will also signify the Commonwealth’s support of and respect for people with disabilities. Please consider joining me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
