MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 24, 2015 11:52 AM
From: Representative David R. Millard
To: All House members
Subject: Licensing and Regulation of Cremation

In the near future I will be introducing legislation to establish comprehensive cremation law under the oversight of the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Currently, crematories must obtain an air quality permit from the Department of Environmental Protection, but otherwise are not comprehensively regulated in Pennsylvania. My legislation would provide for the licensing and regulation of crematories and prohibit the cremation of human remains except in a licensed facility.

All new and existing crematories would be required to be licensed by the Department of Health and would be subject to inspection. The legislation also establishes procedures that must be followed in all cremations, and gives the Department of Health the authority to adopt regulations necessary to implement the law.

I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.

Introduced as HB815
