MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Honoring Head Coach and Teacher Ron Cohen (George Washington High School)

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution honoring Ron Cohen, legendary Head Coach of the George Washington High School Football Team in the City of Philadelphia, who is retiring after 30 years of coaching and more than 48 years as a teacher.

On February 17, 2015, Coach Cohen will be stepping down after a remarkable, distinguished career during several decades in which his football teams were dominant in the City of Philadelphia. During his 30-year tenure as Head Coach of the George Washington Eagles, he compiled an impressive overall record of 261-84-2 (a .757 winning percentage) and won 12 Public League championships.

Over the course of his career, Coach Cohen earned numerous distinctions and awards. Among these are:
  • Three-time winner of the Philadelphia Eagles “Coach of the Month” Award.
  • First coach in his school’s history to win ten consecutive games.
  • Named “Coach of the Year” on nine different occasions.
  • Holds the city record for most playoff wins with 55.
  • Has coached seven Big 33 football stars, including four players who have gone on to play in the NFL.
  • Named the Philadelphia Daily News “Coach of the Decade.”
  • Elected to the Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
  • Elected to the City All Star Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
Coach Cohen’s on-field success has been considerable, and he is quick to share the credit with the many assistance coaches he has teamed up with over the years. Moreover, Coach Cohen truly counts as his greatest achievements the positive influence he has had the privilege of having on many young students throughout his coaching and teaching career. Indeed, despite the many challenges inner-city kids often face, through Coach Cohen’s encouragement and mentoring, some of his students have gone on to earn a college education, and numerous others have become contributing citizens.

Please join me in honoring legendary Head Coach Ron Cohen for his contributions and service to this Commonwealth’s students.
