MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution - Designating February 4, 2015 as "National Girls and Women in Sports Day"

Next week, I intend to introduce a resolution designating February 4, 2015 as National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The theme of this year’s event is “Game on!”

National Girls and Women in Sports Day has been celebrated every year since 1987 on the first Wednesday in February. This event is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.

The U.S. General Assembly has recognized the importance of girls and women in sports through Title IX, which governs the overall equity of treatment and opportunity in athletics so women have equal opportunities to participate in athletics. The number of girls participating in high school sports has increased from just under 300,000 in 1972 to nearly 3.2 million in 2013. Additionally, the number of women participating in college sports has grew from fewer than 32,000 in 1972 to nearly 200,000 in 2013.

Please join me by co-sponsoring this resolution and acknowledging the past and current achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for girls and women in sports.
