MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 12, 2015 12:01 PM
From: Representative P. Michael Sturla
To: All House members
Subject: Grants to Fire Companies

In the near future I will introduce legislation to amend Title 35, Chapter 78 (Grants to Fire Companies and Volunteer Services) to expand the eligibility of the grants.

Currently, grants of not less than $2,500 and no more than $15,000 are provided per fire company regardless of whether they are volunteer or municipal.

This may be adequate in boroughs or townships with one or two fire companies, but in the City of Philadelphia there are 63 firehouses under one fire company. In Pittsburgh, there are 29 firehouses under one fire company. In both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and any other place where a fire company has multiple firehouses (many third class cities), they are only authorized to receive up to $15,000 for their entire fire company – regardless of how many firehouses they have.

We need to make this program fairer and more equitable by amending the law to provide for a definition of “firehouse”, which is not currently defined, and then making an additional exception in subsection 7813 that would allow each firehouse, not just the fire company, to be eligible for the grant.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation.
