MEMORANDUM

From: Representative Cherelle L. Parker and Rep. Mark B. Cohen, Rep. Dwight Evans, Rep. Stephen Kinsey
To: All House members
Subject: Joyce Craig Condolence Resolution

On behalf of the Philadelphia Delegation, we will be introducing a condolence resolution honoring the life and sacrifice of Philadelphia Firefighter Joyce Craig, who resided in the 202nd Legislative District and tragically lost her life in the line of duty on December 9, 2014, in the 203rd Legislative District.

As a child, Ms. Craig dreamed of being a firefighter. She graduated from Philadelphia’s Murrell Dobbins Vocational High School in 1995 and worked for SEPTA before entering the Fire Academy. During her 11 years of dedicated service at the Philadelphia Fire Department, Ms. Craig served at Engine 9 (West Mount Airy), Engine 45 (North Philadelphia), and Engine 64 (Lawncrest). An exceptional first responder, Ms. Craig was known for her hard work, bravery, and professionalism, heralded by Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer as a “firefighter’s firefighter.”

On Tuesday, December 9, 2014, Ms. Craig lost her life responding to a fire at a home in the West Oak Lane section of Philadelphia. True to her strong work ethic and commitment to her profession, Ms. Craig was working an overtime shift that day and assisted with the rescue of an elderly resident while battling the fire. Ms. Craig was 36 years old and the first female firefighter in Philadelphia to die in the line of duty. She is survived by a 16-year-old son and a 16-month-old daughter.

Please join us in honoring the life and extraordinary sacrifice of Philadelphia Firefighter Joyce Craig.
