MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 2, 2014 02:15 PM
From: Representative David M. Maloney, Sr.
To: All House members
Subject: Amending the Pennsylvania Game Code to increase the availability of certified hunter education courses in our public schools.

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce (former House Bill 126) legislation amending the Pennsylvania Game Code to increase the availability of certified hunter education courses in our public schools. This is extremely important as our hunter numbers, and most importantly junior hunter numbers have been declining.

Specifically, my legislation will require that every Commonwealth school district shall make available at no-charge to the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC), a classroom or instructional facility under school district jurisdiction at which hunter education classes can be conducted if requested by the PGC. After-school, evening, or weekend classes would be made available to the public as a community service -- free of charge to students and no charge to the instructors. Hunter-trapper education courses would be taught by instructors who are certified by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. There would be no cost to school districts for class instructors and class materials which would be provided be PGC. All classes would need to comply with curriculum standards and program policies as established by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Making these certified hunter education safety courses more readily available at locations that are both familiar and easily accessible to students and parents will help to increase interest and participation in the sport of hunting and the conservation of our natural resources. Such an endeavor to increase this opportunity for students will be of great benefit toward further protecting our valued hunting tradition, and toward preserving this important part of our heritage for future generations to enjoy.
