Subject: Honoring Washington & Jefferson College Football Team for 700th Win

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution honoring the Washington & Jefferson College Football Team to commemorate its 700th all-time win in program history. On September 20, 2014, the team accomplished this feat against Carnegie Mellon with a 48-30 victory at Cameron Stadium in Washington, Pennsylvania. The Washington & Jefferson College football program is the 25th team in all National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) divisions, and only the third NCAA Division III school, to reach 700 wins.

Established in 1781, Washington & Jefferson College has a proud winning tradition and distinguished academic and athletic history. In 1890, the college played its first football season, and the team quickly became one of the top teams in the country. In 1922, the Washington & Jefferson “Presidents” Football Team shared the national football title with the University of California following the only scoreless tie in Rose Bowl history. With an enrollment of 450 students, Washington & Jefferson College was the smallest school ever to play in the Rose Bowl, and were 14 point underdogs going into the game. The team fielded the same 11 men the whole game, each of whom played on offense and defense, while also playing the first freshman ever to play in a Rose Bowl, and the first African American to play quarterback in a Rose Bowl.

In the modern era, the Washington & Jefferson College Football Team has completed 30 consecutive winning seasons, which is the fourth-longest active streak among all NCAA divisions. Moreover, over the past four decades, the Washington and Jefferson College Football Program produced more than 50 All-Americans and 30 Academic All Americans. The football team entered its 123rd season with an all-time record of 697 wins, 383 losses, and 40 ties, and the current team continued this victorious tradition by prevailing over its first three opponents of the 2014 season to reach 700 wins.

Please join me in honoring the Washington & Jefferson College Football Team for reaching this most noteworthy milestone.
