House of Representatives
Session of 2013 - 2014 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: September 16, 2014 03:37 PM
From: Representative Mike Turzai and Rep. Harold A. English
To: All House members
Subject: Designating October 17, 2014 as "St. Anthony School Programs Day"

In the near future, Representative English and I plan to introduce a resolution designating October 17, 2014 as “St. Anthony School Programs Day” in Pennsylvania. An integral part of the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s educational community for over 60 years, St. Anthony School Programs has dedicated its efforts to creating a Catholic-based, inclusive educational environment for children, ages 5 through 21, with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities, such as autism.

St. Anthony School Programs traces its history to the opening of St. Anthony Village, an orphanage in Oakmont, Pennsylvania that was established in 1921 by several parishes within the Diocese of Pittsburgh in order to provide education and faith training to children. In 1953, St. Anthony Village broadened its mission to educating children with intellectual disabilities and changed its name to St. Anthony School for Exceptional Children to reflect this new mission. Then, in 1992, St. Anthony School for Exceptional Children became St. Anthony School Programs with the focus of delivering services to students with intellectual disabilities through an inclusive program across nine elementary schools within the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

Today, St. Anthony School Programs serves students with a wide range of intellectual disabilities through an individualized educational program that offers a curriculum to promote academic and spiritual development, in conjunction with specialized services such as instruction in daily living skills, motor skills, behavioral support, and speech and language therapy. With a mission to maximize each student's potential for academic learning, foster self-respect and confidence, and develop competence in employment and living skills, the program continues to help students with disabilities become active and contributing members of their communities.

I hope that you will join us in recognizing St. Anthony School Programs by co-sponsoring this legislation.

Thank you for your consideration.
