Subject: | Resolution Designating October 17, 2014 as “Mammography Day” in Pennsylvania and Recognizing October 2014 as “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month” |
This year, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month will celebrate its 29th anniversary while National Mammography Day will mark its 21st anniversary. Efforts to make people aware of all types of cancer, particularly breast cancer, remain important. For example, the American Cancer Society estimates that in the United States for 2014, 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and approximately 40,430 women will die from breast cancer, while roughly 2,360 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in men and approximately 430 men will die from breast cancer. While great strides have been made, much remains to be done to educate both women and men about breast cancer health in order to empower them to take charge of their own health through efforts such as: practicing regular self-breast exams to identify changes, scheduling regular doctor visits, having mammograms with their healthcare provider as recommended, adhering to prescribed treatment and knowing the facts about recurrence. With that goal in mind, I will introduce a resolution designating October 17, 2014 as “Mammography Day” in Pennsylvania and recognizing October 2014 as “National Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the Commonwealth. I hope you will join me in sponsoring this resolution and in urging residents to take action to stay healthy when it comes to breast cancer. |
