Subject: | Posthumous Honoring of the late Frank L. Gilyard, Jr. |
SHORT DURATION CO-SPONSORSHIP (To be submitted soon.) I will soon be offering a Rule 35 resolution honoring the late Frank L. Gilyard, Jr. of Reading for his lifetime efforts to establish the Central Pennsylvania African-American Museum in Reading. Mr. Gilyard spent most of his life acquiring artifacts pertaining to the history of the transition away from slavery, and the "Underground Railroad" as it operated out of the Delmarva Peninsula, through Philadelphia and then through the Reading area by way of the Schuylkill River valley. Ironically, this is one of the few parts of the "Underground Railroad" that involved some travel on an actual physical railroad, the old Philadelphia and Reading line. The collection of artifacts still is in the care of Frank's widow and his associates, and awaits a permanent home as a fixed-site museum. Pending that event, the contribution of Frank L. Gilyard, Jr. in collecting, curating and preserving these key pieces of African-American cultural history in Pennsylvania deserves the recognition of this House. Frank will be greatly missed. Please consider co-sponsoring this resolution. |
