Subject: | Resolution - National Police Week in Pennsylvania |
In the very near future, I plan to introduce a resolution to designate May 11th through May 17th, 2014 as National Police Week in Pennsylvania designating May 15, 2014 as “Police Officers Memorial Day in Pennsylvania”. When President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation in 1962 it designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and that week of which that date fell as Police Week. Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world participate in numerous events to honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Beginning in 1982, a memorial service was and still is held in Senate Park, Washington D.C. where years later has become known as National Police Week. It is important that all citizens know and understand the duties, responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of their law enforcement agency, and that members of our law enforcement agency recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and property, by protecting them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent against deception and the weak against oppression; and I hope that you will join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
