MEMORANDUM

Posted: April 23, 2014 10:45 AM
From: Representative John Taylor
To: All House members
Subject: Moyamoya Awareness Day

Next week, I plan on introducing a resolution recognizing May 6, 2014, as "Moyamoya Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.

Moyamoya disease is a rare disorder of the cerebrovascular system which causes arteries at the base of the brain to narrow, resulting in blocked blood flow to the brain and to compensate for the blockage, the body forms a tangle of tiny blood vessels.

Moyamoya may lead to a transient ischemic attack (TIA) and both children and adults may experience a stroke, followed by weakness or paralysis on one side of the body. Other systems of the disorder include aphasia, a speech problem that impairs language comprehension, vision problems, disturbed consciousness, reduced cognitive ability, distorted functioning of senses and involuntary movements. Because the arteries continue to narrow, surgery is needed to prevent mental decline and recurrent strokes.

I invite you to join me in cosponsoring this House Resolution.
