Subject: Morquio Syndrome Awareness Day in Pennsylvania

I am introducing a resolution recognizing May 15, 2014, as “Morquio Syndrome Awareness Day” in Pennsylvania.

Morquio Syndrome is part of a group of lysomal storage disorders called mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS). It is an inherited disease in which a deficiency or malfunction of specific enzymes leads to an abnormal accumulation of certain complex carbohydrates in the body.

Morquio Syndrome causes physical abnormalities as well as respiratory, cardiac, eye, ear and skin abnormalities. It occurs in 1 in 200,000 births and usually manifests between the ages of 1 and 3.

Although there is no cure for Morquio Syndrome or other MPS disorders, treatments can be enhanced through the development of early detection techniques and early intervention. Unfortunately, treatments and research advancements for Morquio Syndrome are limited by a lack of awareness about MPS disorders.

By recognizing May 15, 2014, as “Morquio Syndrome Awareness Day” we can learn more about Morquio Syndrome and other related MPS disorders and take a proactive approach in developing effective therapies and a potential cure for these rare diseases. Thank you!
