MEMORANDUM

Subject: Hepatitis Awareness Month in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation recognizing the month of May, 2014 as “Hepatitis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver and also refers to a group of viral infections that affect the liver. Viral hepatitis, or the inflammation of the liver caused by a virus, is the leading cause of liver cancer and the most common reason for liver transplantation. Every year, approximately 15,000 Americans die from liver cancer or chronic liver disease associated with viral hepatitis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic hepatitis infections are a silent epidemic affecting more than five million Americans and more than 130,000 Pennsylvanians.

Despite the deadly nature of this disease, as many as 75 percent of the millions of people in the United States, with chronic viral hepatitis, do not know they are infected. As a result, the CDC has designated May, 2014 as National Hepatitis Awareness Month, with the national theme “know More Hepatitis,” in hopes of highlighting the serious damage hepatitis can cause to the health and well-being of many Americans.

Please join me in recognizing May, 2014 as “Hepatitis Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania by co-sponsoring this resolution to encourage all Pennsylvania’s to “Know More Hepatitis.”
