Subject: | Cosponsorship Request for Legislation Condemning Racial Intolerance and Racial Profiling |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution condemning racial intolerance and racial profiling. Discrimination and racial intolerance are contrary to America’s democratic principles of equality and the right of all people to be treated fairly. The systemic racism apparent in the actions of persons who racially profile fellow citizens reinforces the social and economic disadvantages experienced by people of color. The impact of racial intolerance and racial profiling was brought to our nation’s attention during the 2013 criminal trial of George Zimmerman. On February 26, 2012, George Zimmerman horrifically shot and killed Trayvon Martin - an unarmed 17-year-old African-American pedestrian - who was characterized as “suspicious” by George Zimmerman. The jury’s acquittal provoked an outcry nationwide among many Americans who are concerned about the societal impact of stand-your-ground laws and racial profiling. I believe that the failure to act or speak out to prevent racial discrimination or acts of intolerance can be considered an act of racial bias or an illegal act of discrimination. And therefore, I urge you to join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. Thank you! |
