Subject: | Designating March 19, 2014 as "Kick Butts Day" |
In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution which would designate March 19, 2014, as "Kick Butts Day" in Pennsylvania. Currently in the United States, 16 million people suffer from smoking-caused illness and tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, accounting more than 400,000 deaths annually. The statistics regarding tobacco use among America’s youth are also alarming. Each day roughly 3,000 youth under the age of 18 try smoking for the first time consuming 800 million packs of cigarettes annually. It is no coincidence that the tobacco industry spends $8.8 billion annually to market their products nationwide, which much of that marketing aimed at America’s younger generation. Please consider joining me by co-sponsoring and supporting designating March 19, 2014, as "Kick Butts Day" in Pennsylvania and in doing so, showing our support and strong commitment to a tobacco-free community, encouraging all youth and adults to pledge to be tobacco-free. |
