Subject: | Review of the Commonwealth's Cyber Security Efforts |
In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution directing the Joint State Government Commission to conduct an examination of the Commonwealth’s Cyber security framework. In light of recent credit and debit card data breaches at Target and Neiman Marcus, which compromised the financial information of over 70 million American consumers, I believe it’s prudent to thoroughly examine the Commonwealth’s efforts to protect and defend the private information collected by our state agencies. State governments are just as vulnerable to cyber-attack as large corporations; one need only to remember the data breach that occurred in Virginia in 2009 when more than 8 million patient records were compromised, including addresses, social security numbers and prescription drug information. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
