MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 5, 2014 01:21 PM
From: Representative Karen Boback
To: All House members
Subject: Governor's Schools of Excellence Act

I am preparing to introduce legislation that will create the Governor’s Schools of Excellence Act, in order to permanently reestablish the Governor’s Schools of Excellence.

Under the Governor’s Schools of Excellence program (Program), students are selected to attend a multi-week, tuition-free, summer enrichment program hosted at an institution of higher education located in Pennsylvania. The Program was established originally in 1973 with a focus on the arts. Over the next several decades, the Program expanded to include additional areas of study. Funding for the Program was discontinued in 2009 under the previous Administration; however, Governor Corbett has proposed to allocate $350,000 for the Program for the 2014-2015 fiscal year.

Under my legislation, the Department of Education (PDE) will establish a minimum of three Governor’s Schools of Excellence in science, agricultural science, engineering and technology at institutions of higher education within the Commonwealth. PDE will administer the Program, under which participants will be selected through a competitive application process.

I look forward to the reestablishment of this important Program, which will provide talented and motivated high school students with the opportunity to challenge themselves academically and develop critical leadership skills.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
