MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Resolution Honoring University of Pittsburgh Chancellor Mark Nordenberg

In the near future, I will introduce a resolution honoring Mark Nordenberg, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh, for his many years of service to the university and the Greater Pittsburgh region. It is my sincere hope you will join me in this effort.

Born in Minnesota, Chancellor Nordenberg first came to the Steel City as a high school senior when his father’s job was transferred. Although he eventually moved, Chancellor Nordenberg came back to Pittsburgh and joined the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh Law School in 1977. Excelling in the classroom, he was the first recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, now presented annually by the law school’s graduating class. Chancellor Nordenberg would eventually serve the university in a number of different capacities, including Dean of the School of Law, Interim Provost of the University, and Distinguished Service Professor. In 1996, he was elected Chancellor and has served in this role ever since.

Last year, Chancellor Nordenberg announced that he would step down in the summer of 2014, following nineteen years in this position. Under Chancellor Nordenberg’s tenure, enrollment has increased by over 20 percent, SAT college entrance exam scores have risen over 180 points, and the university’s endowment has increased six-fold. The University of Pittsburgh now ranks fifth among all American universities in federal science and engineering research and development support obtained by members of its faculty. Moreover, the school continues to be an academic and economic powerhouse in Western Pennsylvania. Annually, over $1.3 billion in personal income is generated in the region from over 30,000 Pitt-supported jobs.

Chancellor Nordenberg has successfully led the University of Pittsburgh for nearly two decades and will continue to serve the community after he steps down as Chancellor. In honor of his many achievements, I invite all members to sign on as co-sponsors to this legislation
