Subject: | Resolution Urging Congress To Pass U.S. H. Res. 456 Relating to Dyslexia |
In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation urging Congress to approve United States House Resolution 456 relating to dyslexia. The federal resolution calls on schools and State and local educational agencies to recognize that dyslexia has significant educational implications that must be addressed. Dyslexia is defined as an unexpected difficulty in reading in an individual who has the intelligence to be a much better reader. It reflects a difficulty in getting to the individual sounds of spoken language which typically impacts speaking, reading, spelling, and often, learning a second language. Dyslexia is highly prevalent, affecting one out of five individuals in some form, and it is persistent. Diagnosis is critical so that focused, evidence-based interventions and necessary accommodations can occur, accompanied by self-awareness, self-empowerment, to progress with school and life success. This resolution recognizes each major element of dyslexia, including its high prevalence, cognitive and neurobiological bases, unexpected nature, persistence, and critically, its profound impact on education and the critical need for action by schools. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to urge support of this United States House resolution to increase dyslexia awareness among schools and other educational agencies. |
