Subject: | Resolution Designating November 21, 2013 “The Great American Smokeout” |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating November 21, 2013 “The Great American Smokeout” in the Commonwealth. On November 21, 2013 smokers across America can take part in the American Cancer Society “Great American Smokeout.” This event will challenge people to stop using tobacco products and help provide them with tools to quit. The “Great American Smokeout” started unofficial in 1970 when a man from Massachusetts urged people to give up tobacco for the day and donate the money they would have spent on tobacco to a local high school. In 1976 the California Division of the American Cancer Society got an estimated one million smokers to quit for the day. That California event was the first “Great American Smokeout,” and the American Cancer Society took the program nationwide in 1977. Please join me in designating November 21, 2013 as “The Great American Smokeout” in Pennsylvania to help eliminate tobacco use in the Commonwealth. |
