| I am preparing to introduce legislation that will require all economics and personal financial literacy education offered by public school entities to be taught by professional educators certified in the area of business, computer and information technology. As part of Act 104 of 2010, the General Assembly amended the Public School Code of 1949 to require the Department of Education (PDE) to encourage Pennsylvania schools to offer economics and personal financial literacy education by distributing resources and curriculum materials to schools and identifying and recognizing those schools implementing exemplary economics and personal financial literacy curricula. Act 104 also allowed PDE to apply for Federal, State or other funding for purposes of economics and personal financial literacy education and to use such funds for grants to public schools and other measures to encourage the implementation of economic and personal financial literacy education programs. However, school districts are not required to assign individuals certified in business education to provide this instruction. By requiring that all economics and personal financial literacy education offered by a school district, charter school, cyber charter school, intermediate unit or area vocational-technical school be taught by a professional educator certified in the area of business, computer and information technology, my bill will help to ensure that the individuals instructing students in economics and personal financial literacy are well-trained to do so.
