Subject: Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designation September 2013 as “Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation Awareness Month” in Pennsylvania.

Atrial fibrillation, or A-fib, is the most common type of irregular heartbeat. According to the American Heart Association, and the American College of Cardiology, non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) makes up 95% of atrial fibrillation cases and effects more than 5 million people across the United States. As of 2010, non-valvular a-fib cost an estimated $6.65 billion per year, including the costs of hospitalization, inpatient and outpatient care, and office and emergency room visits. According to AHA and the National Stroke Association, individuals with NVAF are greater risk of stroke, and about 15% of strokes are caused by a-fib.

With these statistics in mind, please join me in raising awareness of non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
