Subject: | Resolution to recognize the late John Morelli, the longest standing Sergeant of the Guard at the Tom of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, and observing June 14, 2013 as John J. Morelli Day and Tomb Honor Guard Day in Pennsylvania |
I will soon introduce a resolution to recognize the late John J. Morelli, the longest standing Sergeant of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and observe June 14, 2013 as John J. Morelli Day and Tomb Honor Guard Day in Pennsylvania. I will offer this resolution in memorial of the service, commitment, dedication and valor of Mr. Morelli because on June 14, 2013, members of the Dickson City Honor Guard, the Raymond-Henry American Legion Post 327 of Olyphant, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7251 of Throop, the Disabled American Veterans of Dickson City Chapter 11, the Marine Corps League of Scranton will sponsor a memorial ceremony at the Olyphant Train Station to honor the service, commitment, dedication and valor of Mr. Morelli. I will give you a brief biography about Mr. Morelli. He lived from January 18, 1918 until December 15, 1996. He was a native of Olyphant, Pa., in Lackawanna County and served in the United States Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict. He was a Bronze Star recipient and later became known as the longest standing Sergeant of the Guard of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. For his service as a Tomb Guard, Mr. Morelli received the Tomb Honor Guard Badge, the second least awarded medal in the U.S. Army. Upon his passing, Mr. Morelli was interned in Section 17 of the Arlington National Cemetery among many of his other tomb guard compatriots. The resolution will honor his service and the service of all those like him who have committed to maintaining the highest standards and traditions of the U.S. Army and the nation while keeping a constant vigil at the National Shrine of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I hope you will join with me in cosponsoring this resolution. |
