MEMORANDUM

Subject: Resolution designating “Moment of Integration Day” in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating September 5, 2013, as the “Moment of Integration Day” in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the integration of Lower Merion School District schools.

Through the 1950s, the Ardmore Avenue School’s students came from the African-American community surrounding the school. However, in 1963, the Lower Merion School District made the decision to integrate its elementary schools, closed the Ardmore Avenue School, and began bussing these students to local elementary schools comprising of predominately white student populations. The day that the Ardmore Avenue School was closed, September 5, 1963, is recognized as a major focal point in the history of Lower Merion School District. The full integration of Lower Merion’s elementary schools changed the social fabric of the community and had a major impact on the lives of students, parents, teachers and administrators.

Please join me in designating September 5, 2013, as “Moment of Integration Day” throughout the Commonwealth to honor the 50th Anniversary of the integration of Lower Merion School District’s elementary schools.
