MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 14, 2013 12:00 PM
From: Representative Dan Truitt
To: All House members
Subject: Alternate Infant & Children’s Health Initiative Act

Earlier this year, I introduced the Infant & Children’s Health Initiative Act as HB49 which has been referred to the Children & Youth Committee. This bill would create a stand-alone act to ensure that insurance carriers would cover the cost of amino-acid based elemental formulas for children with severe food allergies or other esophageal disorders that prevent them from consuming normal foods. It has since come to my attention that we already have a similar law for sufferers of Phenylketonuria (PKU) which is another disorder that prevents children from consuming normal foods and it occurred to me that it might be easier to amend the existing law than to enact a new stand-alone law.

So, in the near future, I will introduce a second bill (copy attached) to achieve the goal of the Infant & Children’s Initiative Act through an amendment to the existing PKU law so that the Children and Youth committee can choose the best option.

Attached is a copy of the proposed bill. I hope that you will join me in sponsoring this effort.

HB 49 co-sponsors include: TRUITT, BISHOP, YOUNGBLOOD, SCHLOSSBERG, KORTZ, WATSON, BRADFORD, GROVE, MCCARTER, THOMAS, BOBACK, DEAN, NEILSON, MUNDY and KIRKLAND
